“Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10: 38-42)
I know I should blog more, I actually do blog elsewhere, I have a personal blog http://karlnova.blogspot.com over there I speak in a more general way because I get visitors from all walks of life so I make it more open for them and speak in a more general way. I still testify and talk about my faith in Christ which is the centre of my life. I talk about the moves I am musically making too which you can also find out about here: http://www.myspace.com/karlnova
Anyway in this piece I am talking directly to believers, yes Christians, so yeah you can say I am preaching to the choir in this one, so choir get your robes on tight and get your keys right. Here we go.
I want to get to heart of something, you see I believe in one thing, “the heart of most matters is a matter of the heart” When all is said and done, when the hype of something dies down, when the sermon is over, when every worship song has been sung, when every theological and doctrinal debate has been had, when everything that can be said is said everything you do as a Christian can narrowed down to the state of your heart for “where the heart is that is where your treasure is” (Matt 6:21)
I love Jesus, he truly is the Son of God, you need to go back to the gospels and read his words, watch his moves and observe how he acted as depicted in the gospels, see how he answered questions and treated people. There is truly none like him. Our walk as believers is about seeking to walk in his footsteps. It is a heart thing. It is how our heart relates to God and dictates our actions towards other people. Jesus summed up the whole old testament when he said:
'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbour as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." (Matt 22:37- 40)
I sincerely think us reading those words in 2010 don’t really get the full impact of him saying that but take yourself back to that time in your mind when the law of Moses reigned supreme and men like Moses and the Prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah etc etc) were held in high esteem and you will see how Jesus summing everything up like that must’ve really left them baffled and to be honest reading this today when so many different folks debate doctrines formulated by greatly esteemed theologians of history all of the time it might leave folks baffled if they really understand that what God demands of his children on a basic level is said in such a simple way.
Just like Martha it is easy to be distracted by so many different things all in the name of serving God but all Mary did was sit at the feet of Jesus and listen. Martha got vexed with Mary for seemingly just chillin’ and not working but Jesus told Martha that “Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” Sometimes it’s so easy to get caught up in the work of The Master and have no time to really focus on The Master of the work, if we really want to be like The Master we need to sit at the feet of The Master and master the basics.
So next time you find yourself caught up and distracted with what you feel is serving God, maybe you need to take time out focus on the Lord. It is not about you, it is about HIM and his message of amazing love and grace that it is really all about, it is about us walking in that love and that is the heart of the matter.
